What Are Trophies Made Of?
Trophies are made from acrylic, glass or lead crystal, cast metal (usually zinc alloy, electroplated to look like gold, silver or bronze), polyester resin, marble or stone, or timber. Most mass-produced trophies combine several of these in one object — a plated metal figure on a plastic column on a stone base. Historically, trophies were silver, pewter and bronze.

- Modern lead crystal must contain at least 24% lead oxide to be labelled as such under EU Council Directive 69/493/EEC; lead glass generally runs 18–40% lead oxide by mass (Wikipedia, Lead glass).
- Acrylic is about half the density of glass at 1.17–1.20 g/cm³, and transmits up to 92% of visible light at 3 mm thickness (Wikipedia, PMMA)).
- Zamak zinc alloys were developed in 1929 by the New Jersey Zinc Company. Zamak 3 is 96% zinc and 4% aluminium and accounts for over 70% of North American zinc die castings (Wikipedia, Zamak).
- Silver was the traditional trophy material. The Kyp Cup, a small two-handled sterling silver cup from around 1699, is an early surviving example, and sporting chalices were traditionally made in silver (Wikipedia, Trophy).
- Australia recovered 87% of its scrap metal in 2020–21 (National Waste Report, released December 2022, via Planet Ark's ACE Hub).

What were trophies historically made of?
The oldest trophies were not manufactured objects at all. Ancient Greek trophies were captured arms and standards hung on a tree or a stake. Roman versions were architectural — columns and arches on a stone foundation.
The trophy as a cup arrives much later. By the 17th and 18th centuries the chalice was the standard award, and it was made in silver. Pewter and bronze followed as cheaper alternatives. By the 19th and 20th centuries the familiar format had settled: a metal figure, a wooden column and a wooden base.
The shift to plastic and resin is recent, and it is a cost story. Mass-produced plastic and resin trophies made recognition affordable for every junior sports club in the country. They also made most trophies disposable.

What is an acrylic trophy made of?
Acrylic trophies are made of polymethyl methacrylate, or PMMA — the same material sold as Perspex and Plexiglas. Wikipedia notes acrylic trophies are commonly made by pouring acrylic casting resin into a mould, and often use Lucite, DuPont's branded acrylic, which was originally developed for aircraft windshields during the Second World War.
Acrylic is popular because it is cheap, light, easy to print on and easy to cut. It is also softer and more easily scratched than glass. When it breaks it goes into large dull pieces rather than shards, which is genuinely safer.
The catch is what happens later. PMMA can be recycled — solvent-and-UV depolymerisation recovers 94–98% of the monomer, and pyrolysis works at 400°C and above — but none of that exists as a service an ordinary person can access. In practice, an acrylic award goes to landfill.
What is the difference between a crystal and a glass trophy?
Lead content, weight and sparkle. Under EU Council Directive 69/493/EEC, "lead crystal" needs at least 24% lead oxide, while "crystalline" and "crystal glass" contain less lead or substitute barium, zinc or potassium oxide.
The lead does two things. It raises the refractive index from about 1.5 to as much as 1.7 or 1.8, which is what produces the extra fire in the surface. And it raises density from about 2.4 g/cm³ for soda glass to around 3.1 g/cm³, which is why real crystal feels heavier than it looks.
Do crystal trophies contain lead, and is that a problem?
Many do. It matters far less for an award on a shelf than for a decanter — the documented risk is leaching into food and drink. One study cited by Wikipedia found port stored in a lead crystal decanter rose from 89 µg/L of lead after two days to 2,000–5,000 µg/L after four months. So a crystal trophy is not a hazard on a desk. It is a problem at end of life, because lead crystal contaminates glass recycling.
What are trophy figures and cups made of?
Almost always cast zinc alloy, then electroplated. Zamak-family alloys are the industry standard for die casting because they take electroplating and chromate conversion coating well, which is precisely what you need to make an inexpensive zinc figure look like bronze.
That is also why the gold finish wears through on the high points first. The colour is a few microns of plating, not the material.
What are marble and stone trophy bases made of?
Some are genuine marble, granite or slate. Some are moulded to look like stone. The test is easy and takes two seconds: real stone is cold to the touch and heavy for its size, and the pattern will not repeat identically on two bases. A moulded base warms up in your hand.
What are timber awards made of?
That depends on whether the timber is solid. A solid hardwood award is one material all the way through, so it can be cut, sanded, repaired and eventually reused. An MDF-and-veneer award is compressed fibre, glue and a printed skin, and it cannot be any of those things.

Which trophy material should you choose?
Choose on three questions, in this order. What will it feel like when someone picks it up? Will they still want it in ten years? And what happens to it after that?
Acrylic wins on price. Crystal wins on immediate impact. Cast zinc wins on weight for money. Solid timber wins on ageing, on repairability and on end of life, which is the part nobody costs in. Are trophies made of real gold or silver?
Almost never. Modern gold, silver and bronze trophy finishes are electroplated layers a few microns thick over cast zinc alloy. Genuine solid silver trophies do exist, mostly as historical or perpetual pieces — the Kyp Cup of around 1699 is a surviving sterling silver example. If a trophy is affordable, the metal colour is plating.
Are trophy bases real marble?
Sometimes. Genuine marble, granite and slate bases are common on mid-range and premium awards. Cheaper trophies often use a moulded base finished to look like stone. Real stone is cold to touch, heavy for its size, and its pattern is unique to that piece. A moulded base warms in your hand within seconds.

Cost tracks material weight, tooling and hand-finishing time far more than it tracks perceived quality, which is why a heavy resin award can look more expensive than it is.

A typical budget trophy is a die-cast zinc or resin figure, electroplated or painted, mounted on a plastic or MDF column, fixed with a steel bolt to a stone or moulded base, with an engraved aluminium or plastic plate. That is four or five materials in one object, which is exactly why it cannot be recycled.
