Reclaimed, Recycled or FSC? What "Sustainable Award" Actually Means

Reclaimed means the material already existed and was heading for landfill, so nothing new was harvested. Recycled means it was broken down and remade. FSC-certified means new timber was harvested from a responsibly managed forest and tracked to the finished product. All three are real claims. Only reclaimed avoids the harvest.

By Zoe Atterbury, Founder & CEO of Bloom Cycle, who works in reclaimed Australian timber at the bench in Brisbane. Last updated 30 July 2026.

Six sustainability labels, decoded

Here is the whole vocabulary in one table. The column that matters most is the last one, because a claim you cannot check is not a claim.

LabelWhat it actually guaranteesWhat it does not guaranteeHow to verify it
ReclaimedThe material was already in service (a floor, a beam, a fence, a pallet) and was diverted from landfill or burning. No new harvestNothing about the original forestry. Nothing about the finish or the glue. It is not a certification and has no single ownerAsk for the species, the source and the story. A real reclaimer can tell you which building it came out of
RecycledThe material was collected, broken down and remade into new materialThat the recycling was efficient, local, or that the item is recyclable again. "Recycled content" can mean 5%Ask for a percentage by weight. For timber, FSC Recycled is a formal label meaning 100% recycled content (fsc.org)
UpcycledThe material was reused at equal or higher value without being broken downNothing at all. There is no standard, no threshold and no verifier behind the wordYou cannot verify it. Treat it as a description of a process, not a claim
FSC-certifiedChain of custody from forest to finished product, with documentation maintained at every step, plus core labour standards including no child or forced labour (fsc.org)That the timber is old-growth-free by your definition, or that no tree was cut. FSC verifies how the harvest happened, not whether it happenedFSC public certificate search. Ask for the certificate code, not the logo
Responsibly sourcedNothingAnythingThere is no verifier. If a named scheme sits behind it, ask which one, then verify that scheme instead
Carbon-offset / carbon-neutralEmissions were counted and an equivalent quantity of offsets was purchasedThat emissions were avoided or reduced. The material impact is unchangedAsk which offset standard and which project. If they cannot name one, it is not a claim

What FSC actually is, and why it deserves a fair hearing

I want to be careful here, because it would be easy for a company that works in reclaimed timber to be unfair about FSC. FSC is a serious standard.

FSC chain of custody verifies that forest-based materials are FSC-certified, that the certified material is identified and tracked through manufacturing and distribution, and that all documentation relating to production, purchase and sales is maintained. Certified organisations also have to meet core labour standards: no child labour, no forced labour, no employment discrimination, and freedom of association (fsc.org).

There are three FSC labels and they are not interchangeable:

  • FSC 100% — all materials come from responsibly managed, FSC-certified forests.
  • FSC Recycled — the product is made from 100% recycled materials.
  • FSC Mix — a mixture of FSC-certified forest material, recycled material, and FSC-controlled wood.

FSC Mix is the one to read closely. It is the most common label on the market and it is a blend, which is a legitimate thing to be, but it is not the same as FSC 100%.

The honest summary: an awards supplier using FSC-certified new timber is doing better than one using unspecified imported hardwood. FSC just answers a different question than reclaimed does.

Reclaimed vs FSC: two questions, not one ranking

FSC asks: was this tree cut down responsibly?

Reclaimed asks: did a tree need to come down at all?

Reclaimed timber has already been harvested, already been milled, and already served a life. Somebody else's decision about forestry was made decades ago and cannot be unmade. What can change is where that timber goes next: into an award, or into landfill.

That is why I keep saying reclaimed is a lower baseline rather than a better certificate. It is not competing with FSC. It sits underneath the question FSC is designed to answer.

There is a second thing reclaimed does that certification cannot. It carries a place with it. When City of Moreton Bay ran the Mayor's Telstra Innovation Awards, we made the trophies from timber waste reclaimed from inside the City of Moreton Bay. Local material, local students, local recognition. No certification scheme in the world produces that, because it is a property of where the material came from, not how it was grown.

How to catch greenwashing in an awards quote

Four tells, all of them easy to spot once you know them.

The adjective with no noun. "Eco-friendly materials." Which materials? Ask, and watch what happens.

The certification logo with no code. Logos are images. Certificates have numbers and public registers. Ask for the number.

The percentage that never appears. "Contains recycled content" is technically true at 3%. Ask for the figure by weight.

The end-of-life silence. If a supplier has genuinely thought about sustainability, they have thought about what happens to the piece in twenty years. If they have not, the sustainability was added at the marketing stage.

And if you want to know how different species behave once they are reclaimed, which Australian timbers make the best awards goes species by species.

Certifications with a public register, in Australia

Bloom Cycle holds three that can be looked up rather than taken on trust:

  • Social Traders Certified — independently verified, with criteria co-designed with MinterEllison and EY and overseen by an independent expert advisory group. Requires that the business exists to solve a social or environmental problem, trades to sustain itself, and reinvests the majority of surplus into that mission.
  • People and Planet First Verified — five standards covering purpose, purpose-first operations, self-sustaining revenue, majority surplus reinvestment, and a legal structure that locks purpose in long term. Stewarded by the Social Enterprise World Forum, Purchasing with Purpose and Good Market.
  • Australian Made licensed — the last substantial transformation happened in Australia. Worth knowing: Australian Made has no minimum percentage of Australian content, since the 50% cost threshold was removed from the rules in February 2017. So "Australian Made" and "made in Australia from Australian material" are not the same statement, and ours is the second one.

Every register link sits on our certifications and impact page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between reclaimed and recycled timber?

Reclaimed timber is reused in its existing form after being salvaged from a previous use, such as a floor or a beam, so it is never broken down. Recycled timber is processed back into raw material and remade, often as particleboard or chip. Reclaimed keeps the grain, the age and the traceability. Recycled keeps the fibre.

Is FSC-certified timber sustainable?

Yes, within what it claims. FSC verifies that timber came from a responsibly managed forest and was tracked through manufacturing, with labour standards attached. It does not claim that no tree was harvested, because a tree was. FSC and reclaimed answer different questions, and an award program can reasonably use either.

Does "upcycled" mean anything legally?

No. Upcycled has no standard, no threshold and no verifying body anywhere in Australia. It describes a process, which is reuse at equal or higher value without breaking the material down. Treat it as a useful description and never as evidence.

How do I verify an award supplier's sustainability claim?

Ask for three things: the material's origin stated plainly as reclaimed, recycled or new; the name of any certifying body plus the public register link; and the percentage of recycled or reclaimed content by weight. Genuine claims survive all three questions. Marketing adjectives do not survive the first.

Are reclaimed timber awards durable?

Yes, and often more so than new timber. Salvaged Australian hardwood is frequently older and denser than anything currently milled, and it has already finished moving and settling. A reclaimed timber award can also be repaired, refinished and re-engraved, which is something a moulded acrylic or resin award cannot be.
