A Trophy Marks a Moment. This Turns It Into a Time Capsule.
An NFC award is a recognition piece with a small passive chip set inside it, so a phone held against the trophy opens a page: the citation, the speech, the photos, the timber's provenance. NFC runs at 13.56 MHz over a typical range of up to 2 cm (NFC Forum). Bloom Cycle's version is a prototype at day one.

The facts this page rests on
- NFC operates at a base frequency of 13.56 MHz with a typical range of up to 2 cm, at data rates from 46 kbit/s to 1.7 Mbit/s (NFC Forum, accessed 30 July 2026). The chip in an award has no battery. It draws what it needs from the phone's field.
- Background tag reading — a tap with no app installed — is supported on iPhone XS and newer, and the phone must have been unlocked at least once since startup, must not be running a Core NFC session or an Apple Pay transaction, must not be using the camera, and must not be in aeroplane mode. The user then has to tap the notification that appears (GoToTags iOS background tag reading reference, accessed 30 July 2026).
- On Android, behaviour changed recently. From Android 16, scanning a tag holding an
https://link triggers anACTION_VIEWintent, so the default browser opens it. Before Android 16, the tag dispatch system needed an app registered for one of three NFC intents, and Android's own documentation states that if no application filters for any of them, the system does "nothing" (Android developer documentation, NFC basics, accessed 30 July 2026). - A common NFC Forum Type 2 chip, the NXP NTAG213, is specified at 10 years data retention and 100,000 write cycles, with 144 bytes of user memory (Seritag NTAG213 reference, accessed 30 July 2026). Reclaimed Australian hardwood lasts considerably longer than ten years.
- 38% of webpages that existed in 2013 were no longer available a decade later, and a quarter of all webpages that existed at some point between 2013 and 2023 were gone by October 2023 (Pew Research Center, When Online Content Disappears, 17 May 2024). The chip is not the fragile part. The link is.

Why would anyone put a chip inside a trophy?
This is the reason, and I wrote it before we had built anything.
One day, a kid is going to pick up a trophy their grandparent won. They'll wonder what it was for. Maybe they never got to meet them — but they've heard all the stories. Then a notification pops up on their phone. Sent from the trophy.
A trophy usually marks a moment. This turns it into a time capsule.
Almost every award in Australia carries a name, a category and a year, and nothing else. The information that made the night matter — what the work actually was, who nominated the person, what was said out loud about them — lives in a programme booklet that goes in a bin and a video file on somebody's phone. The object survives. The meaning does not travel with it.
What is NFC, and how does a tap on an award actually work?
NFC is near-field communication: a short-range radio standard at 13.56 MHz with a typical working range of up to 2 cm (NFC Forum). A passive tag inside a recognition piece holds a tiny amount of data — on an NTAG213, 144 bytes of user memory, which is enough for a web address and not much else. The phone powers the chip, reads the address, and opens it. The content itself sits on the web, not in the timber.
That is the honest architecture. A connected award is a physical key to a web page. The engineering interest is in the key; the actual work is in the page and in who looks after it.
Do you need an app to tap an NFC award?
Usually no, and "usually" is doing real work in that sentence.
On iPhone XS and newer, a tag holding a website record produces a notification that the person taps to open. Earlier iPhones with NFC hardware can read tags, but not in the background without an app. On Android from version 16, a tag holding an https:// link opens in the default browser. On older Android versions, the tag dispatch system needs an app registered to handle the intent, and does nothing if none is. Some phones need the screen on and unlocked, and the tap point matters — 2 cm is not much, and the NFC antenna sits in a different place on different handsets.
Anyone selling a smart trophy who tells you a tap "just works on every phone" has not tested it on enough phones.
What could a connected recognition piece hold?
Not the object's specifications. The night's.
- The citation, in full — the nomination text, not the truncated category line engraved on the front.
- A video from the night the piece was presented, and the speech.
- The photographs, including the ones with the recipient's team in them.
- The provenance of the timber: which species, where it was reclaimed from, and what it was before. For a council programme, that can mean timber reclaimed from within the council's own region.
- The inclusive-employment impact behind the piece — the paid hours it created, and the model that funds them.
- Who else has held it, on a perpetual trophy.
The last two are the ones buyers react to hardest, because they are the only part of an award's story that a procurement officer currently has to take on trust. Sustainable corporate awards in Australia covers the material side of that claim as it stands today, without a chip involved.
Why put the chip in the object instead of printing a QR code?
A QR code is cheaper, works on every phone with a camera, and does not care about handset antenna placement. Anyone claiming NFC is straightforwardly better than a QR code is arguing for the more expensive option on aesthetic grounds and hoping you do not notice.
The case for the chip is narrower and more specific. A QR code is a visible printed square that has to sit on the surface of a hand-finished timber award, and it dates the object the moment the visual language changes. A chip is invisible, so the piece stays a piece. The object itself becomes the key, which matters for exactly the scenario at the top of this page: a grandchild picks up a trophy, and the trophy is the thing that talks. Nobody scans a square on a shelf for fun.

The bottom two rows are the ones worth arguing about. A connected award moves a named person's story from a room onto the internet, and the object is the access credential. Whoever holds the trophy holds the key.
Is connected recognition accessible?
It has to be, and a tap is not automatically more accessible than a square.
Bloom Cycle treats inclusion as the reason the business exists rather than a feature of it, so the honest position is that both formats have a cost. A QR code needs enough vision to find and frame it with a camera. A tap needs enough motor control and proprioception to hold a phone steady against a 2 cm target on an object that may be heavy. Neither is universal, and a piece that offers both is more accessible than a piece that insists on one.
The destination page is where most of the accessibility actually lives, and it is where most connected-object projects fail. Video without captions, a speech without a transcript, photographs without alternative text and a citation set as an image are all common. WCAG 2.2 is the standard to hold it to (W3C Recommendation, 12 December 2024). A recognition piece for a programme celebrating inclusion that opens an inaccessible page is worse than an engraved plate.
Who controls the content on a connected award?
This is the serious question, and in the material written about smart trophies it is almost never asked.
The content is about a named person, and it may include their image, their voice, a description of their circumstances and the names of their colleagues. That is personal information regardless of how nicely it is presented. Consent needs to be recorded at the time the piece is made, not assumed from the fact of an award, and it needs a route to withdraw later.
Then there are the questions with no default answer:
- Who is the publisher — the organisation that ran the awards, the recipient, or the manufacturer?
- What happens when the recipient leaves the organisation? The trophy goes with them. Does the page?
- What happens when the organisation is acquired, restructured or wound up, and the domain lapses?
- Who can change the content, and does the person it describes get told when it changes?
- What happens in twenty years, when the person named on the page cannot be asked?
- Is the tag write-locked? An NFC tag that has not been locked can be rewritten by anyone holding a phone against it, which means the object could be made to point somewhere else entirely.
There is an Australian legal wrinkle worth knowing. Under the Privacy Act, a small business is one with an annual turnover of $3 million or less, and most are not automatically covered (OAIC small business guidance, accessed 30 July 2026). So a community awards programme run by a small organisation may have no statutory privacy obligation at all here, which makes this an ethical decision rather than a compliance one. Separately, the statutory tort for serious invasions of privacy commenced on 10 June 2025 and is broader in application than the Privacy Act, extending to individuals and entities that are not APP entities (OAIC, accessed 30 July 2026). Publishing a page about a named person is a decision with consequences either way.
Bloom Cycle's view is that the recipient should have the final say over content about them, and that this needs to be written into how a programme is set up rather than discovered afterwards. Getting that wrong is the one failure mode that would make a connected recognition piece worse than no chip at all.
Will an NFC award still work in twenty years?
The timber will. The chip is specified at ten years of data retention (NTAG213). The link is the part that will fail first, and there is data on exactly how likely that is: 38% of webpages that existed in 2013 were gone within a decade, and 21% of webpages on government sites contain at least one broken link (Pew Research Center, 17 May 2024).
So a connected award that is honest about itself has to solve four things, and none of them are the chip. A stable address under someone's long-term control, with permanent redirects. A responsible party named for renewing it. A fallback engraved into the piece itself, so the object still says something true with no phone involved. And a plain, exportable copy of the content held by the recipient, not only by the issuer.
Bloom Cycle has not solved all four. Saying so is the point of publishing this page rather than a press release.
Where Bloom Cycle's connected recognition actually is right now
We're at day one of what this can become — it's still in prototype — and we'll keep developing it.
That sentence is the whole status. There is no price, no product page, no feature list and no launch date, and a proper recognition piece from Bloom Cycle today is timber, engraving and hand-finishing, which is what our awards cost and how they are quoted. The chip is a direction we are claiming out loud so that we can be held to it, in the same spirit as publishing what three finalist listings actually returned and the argument that a social enterprise is a real trading business.
Recognition that holds its story, for whoever picks it up next. That is the direction.
